Sudan Formally Orders Firms to Shut South's Oil Flow

Sudan's oil ministry formally told oil companies on Tuesday to block the export flow of South Sudanese crude oil, following an order from President Omar al-Bashir. Oil Minister Awad Ahmad al-Jaz presented the written directive in a meeting with senior executives of the GNPOC joint operating company and Petrodar, the ministry said.

African Youths Demand Involvement In Governance

Ask members of the African political elite, civil society activists or anyone else about the role of youths in national development and you will hear a lot of profound, if trite, catchphrases, such as 'The youths are the future; they are the leaders of tomorrow.' African leaders even declared 2009-18 the African Youth Decade. Before that, in 2006, they adopted the African Youth Charter, with one of the goals being to lure younger people into participating in political debates and decision-making processes.

Apple's Tim Cook Defends Tax Claim

The technology giant Apple has been defending itself against accusations that it's avoided paying tax on tens of billions of dollars in profits. Chief executive Tim Cook told a US Senate committee Apple paid all the taxes it owed, complying with both the law, and the spirit of the law. He said last year it paid $6bn to the US Treasury, a tax rate of about 30%.

Breastfeeding can Reduce High Blood Pressure

It is known to have health benefits for both mother and baby, but a new study shows that breastfeeding can also lower the chance of mothers developing high blood pressure - even decades later. The researchers, from the University of Western Sydney, also found that the longer a woman breastfed, the lower her odds of developing high blood pressure before the age of 64.

African Child Celebration 2013 ...Theme: 'Eliminating Harmful Social And Cultural Practices Affecting Children Education: Our Collective Responsibility'

37 years ago (1976 -2013) today in Soweto, South Africa, thousands of black school children took to the streets in a march more than half a mile long, to protest the inferior quality of their education and to demand their right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of young boys and girls were short down; and in the two weeks of protest that followed, more than a hundred people were killed and more than a thousand were injured. To honour the memory of those killed and the courage of all those who marched, the Day of the African Child has been celebrated on 16 June every year since 1991, when it was first initialized by the then organization of African Unity, now the African Union. The day draws attention to the lives of African Children today.
